Mayor opens new community play area
The Mayor of Drogheda, Michelle Hall, has officially opened a new community play area at Rampart Green in Drogheda, creating a shared space for children and families in the area to play, gather and spend time outdoors.
The new amenity was opened on Wednesday 8 April following a ribbon‑cutting ceremony attended by the Mayor, local residents and representatives from North and East Housing Association (NEHA) and Tuath Housing.
Rampart Green is a mixed residential community of more than 100 homes owned by NEHA and Tuath Housing. The project was shaped directly by residents, who took part in surveys and in‑person engagement to identify what was most needed on the green. Families highlighted the importance of safe play equipment, goal posts, sensory play features, accessible seating and improved planting.
These priorities informed the final design, which includes new play equipment, two goal posts, sensory elements, wheelchair‑accessible picnic tables, standard benches and enhanced landscaping. The play equipment was installed by KOMPAN, who will also provide ongoing safety inspections to ensure the facility is maintained to a high standard.
The works followed a formal tender process issued in 2025, which required inclusive design, age‑appropriate play equipment, landscaping, surfacing and accessible installation on the existing communal green. Planning permission was granted for the playground, goal posts and associated site works, confirming the legal ownership of the green and completion of all required public notices.
The development was supported by the Housing Finance Agency’s Social Investment Fund, with a combined investment of approximately €30,000 from the Fund and the partner organisations. NEHA and Tuath Housing also contributed additional enhancement works to complete the facility.
Elaine Bruton, Tenant Services and Engagement Manager with NEHA, said the project demonstrated the value of resident‑led design.
“By working closely with residents and with our partners in Tuath Housing, we have been able to deliver a play area that improves safety, supports inclusion and strengthens the sense of community on the green. It is great to see this space opened and ready to be enjoyed by local families.”
A Tuath Housing spokesperson added that partnership working was key to delivering the project, thanking residents and funders for their involvement and support.
The new play area provides a safe, inclusive outdoor space that will support everyday life in Rampart Green and contribute positively to the wider neighbourhood.
